What do we mean by Satsang

“He is unborn, ageless, beginningless and deathless.
He is smaller than the smallest and larger than the largest.
He moves and moves not. He is far as well as near.
Guru is inside everything and outside everything all at once.
Guru is beyond cause and effect. He is the supreme Akasha.
Guru is consciousness and bliss, never–ending, self–luminous, imperishable and pure.”

Skanda Purnana

According to the shastras the sweetest sound in the Universe is of the word Guru. Guru is the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance through light of gyana. Gu also stands Gunateet i.e., beyond all three gunas and Ru stands for Rupavarjit i.e., One who cannot be confined to a single form since he Himself is the formless and form (live Guru) – both at once. Gu also means Maya (illusion) and Ru means Mukti (mukti). Therefore, the one who liberates us from Maya and shatters all illusions is Guru.

Guru is the culmination of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh since as Lord Brahma, Guru is the origin the starting point of gyana. He is the one who sows the seed of gyana in the mind of spiritual seekers. As Vishnu he sustains the gyana through doses of divinity – satsangs, meditations, His proximity etc. As Shiva, a Guru completely wipes out the ignorance of His disciples and makes them realise their true Self, discarding all other false identities and impressions. That’s why it’s said that when one finds a Guru, they find the whole world. There is nothing more left to achieve once we find a Guru. Finding a Guru is finding the treasure trove of Brahma gyana and attracting the blessings of all the Gods, Goddesses and deities in the Universe. Adi Shankaracharya in His holy text Vivekchudamani mentions that it’s rare to get a human birth, rarer is to have a desire for liberation, rarer still is the capacity to surrender and rarest of all is to have a true Sadguru.

The biggest and most fortunate event in anyone’s life is the entry of an enlightened Guru as a Guru is the aakar (form) of the nirakar (formless) who, out of compassion is born for the upliftment and spiritual evolution of innumerable souls who had been craving for union with God since thousands of births. A Guru’s only objective is to free all His disciples from their sorrows, pains, sins, conditions, attachments, delusions and past karmas so as to establish them in their true form and merge them with the Creator.

While no words, scriptures, bhajans, mantras or hymns can ever fully describe a Guru or do justice to His grace and magnanimity; the below extract from Guru Gita helps us understand the qualities and traits of a true Guru and is the perfect tribute to be offered to our Guru:

sadhguru meditation course
He who is established in the bliss of Consciousness and is the embodiment of Bliss
Whose proximity gives one unparalleled joy and contentment
He who practices and preaches nothing but Gyana, or the Highest Wisdom
He who is free from all conflict, all confusion, discrimination, and duality of all kinds
He who is pure, unblemished, omnipresent, and expansive like the sky
Whose sole objective is to make everyone realize Tat Tvam Asi i.e. You are That
He who is eternally One with that Divine Truth has no impurities, is unshakeable, and is a witness to everything at all times
He who is beyond all emotions (Bhavas) and is free of the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas)
I Bow down before such a Sadguru.
